It was hypothesized that sleep disturbance would have a positive relationship with aggression and healthy food habits would have a negative relationship with aggression. A secondary hypothesis was formulated that cognitive control would mediate the relationship of sleep disturbance and food habits with aggression. To conduct the study, a correlational research design was used. The sample of the study comprised of 157 adolescents in age range of 12-18 years; they were selected from secondary and higher secondary grades from different private and government schools and colleges of Lahore. The sample were selected through cluster random sampling technique. The Adolescent Food Habits Checklist, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Color word interference test taken from Delis Kaplan Executive functions system (D-KEFS; Delis, Kaplan, & Kramer, 2001), and Aggression Scale (Mathur & Bhatnagar, 2004) were used to assess the healthy food habits, sleep disturbance, level of cognitive control, and the level of aggression respectively. Pearson product movement correlation analysis and mediation model using Baron and Kenny’s guidelines were calculated to assess study objectives. The results showed that sleep disturbance were positively correlated with aggression and healthy food habits were negatively correlated with aggression. Moreover, the healthy food habits were negatively correlated with error measure of cognitive control (more errors represented poor cognitive control). Furthermore, the findings indicated that cognitive control (error measure) mediated the link between healthy food habits and aggression (Soble z test = -1.74, p <.05). Limitations, implications, and future directions of the current study were discussed.Item PARENTAL PRACTICES AS A PREDICTOR OF SELF-REGULATION AND SOCIAL COMPETENCE AMONG ADOLESCENTS(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2018) Tooba Kanwal; SP14-BSPSY-007; Dr Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 5404The objective of this study is to assess the direct and indirect relationships between parental practices (punishment and reward), self regulation, and social competence among adolescents. To conduct the study, a sample of 194 adolescents, ranging in age from 12 to 17 years (M age =14.53, Sd = 1.04), were selected from different schools. It was hypothesized that parental punishment would be significantly negatively correlated with self regulation and social competence; and parental reward would be significantly positively correlated with self regulation and social competence. A secondary hypothesis was to assed whether self regulation mediate the relationship between parental punishment and social competence; and whether self regulation mediates the relationship between parental reward and social competence. The random sampling technique was used to approach the participants. The four susbcales taken from Parent-Child Relationship Scale (Rao, 2000) namely symbolic punishment, object punishment, symbolic reward, and object reward, and social competence, Teen Survey (Child Trends for the Flourishing Children Project), and self regulation scale (Schwarzer, Diehl & Schmitz, 1999) were used to assess parenting practices of punishment and reward, self regulation and social competence respectively. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and Mediation analysis using SPSS and Process software. Results showed that specific parenting practices were significantly correlated with self regulation and social. Results from mediation analyses indicated that self regulation mediated the relationship of mother physical reward and father object punishment with social competence among adolescents. It is concluded that punishment and reward are important factors in adolescent psychological and social adjustmentItem Cognitive Control and Decision Making among Adults: The Role of Aging(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2018) Manoor Khan; SP14-BPSY-013; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 5405The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the direct and indirect relationship between aging, cognitive control and decision making, and to assess whether age moderates the relationship between cognitive control and decision making styles. To conduct the study, a sample of 195 adults, ranging in age from 30-59 years, were selected from different institutions and organizations of the Lahore city. It was hypothesized that there would be significant relationships between age, cognitive control, and decision-making styles. It was also hypothesized that there would be significant relationship between age and decision-making styles in adults. Additionally, it was hypothesized that cognitive control would mediate the association between age and decision-making styles. Moreover, it was also hypothesized that age would moderate the relationship between cognitive control and decision-making styles. The convenient sampling technique was used to approach the participants. DKEFS Color Word Interference test, and Design Fluency Test (Delis, Kaplan, & Krammer, 2001), General Decision Making Style Inventory (Scott,& Bruce, 1995) were used to assess the level of cognitive control, and the styles of decision making respectively. Pearson product movement correlation and moderated mediation analyses were used to test study hypotheses. The Results showed that age and cognitive control were positively correlated with rational and spontaneous decision-making styles, while negatively correlated with dependent and avoidant decision-making styles. Findings from mediation analyses indicated that cognitive control as assessed from CWIT measure mediated the relationship between age and dependent, avoidant, and spontaneous decision-making styles, while cognitive control as assessed from DFT mediated the link of age with dependent and avoidant decision making styles. Finally, moderation analyses indicated that cognitive control was more strongly correlated with dependent, avoidant, and spontaneous decision making styles among older adults as compared to middle adults. Limitations, implications, and future directions of the current study were discussedItem Maternal Abuse, Mental Health Problems and Academic Performance in Adolescents of Single Mother and Both Parents(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2018) Faiza Salabat; SP15-BPY-007; DR. Farzana Ashraf; LHR TP 5409The present study was designed to investigate the link of maternal abuse with mental health problems and academic performance in adolescents. In addition, moderation between mental health problems and academic performance was also assessed. The sample comprised of 300 adolescents (150=living with both parents,150=living with single mothers) age ranges between 11-18 years (M=14.46, SD= 1.71). In this correlational study, the data was collected through purposive sampling technique from different schools of Manga Mandi. Maternal abuse, mental health problems and academic performance was measured by administering Child Abuse Scale Revised (CAS) Adolescent version (Malik & Ghaffar 2014), Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (Lovibond, S & Lovibond P, 1995) and previous class percentages respectively. Regression analysis indicated that maternal abuse was the strongest predictor of mental health problems and academic performance. Further, parental status significantly moderated the link between maternal abuse and mental health problems. Study concluded that maternal abuse was more associated with mental health problems in case of both parents whereas showed lower association in case of single mothers. This study is a unique contribution for the society in a way, it helps in the better development of children and provide awareness to the parents that how their maltreatment practices could affect the academic performance and mental health of their children.Item PERSONALITY TRAITS, WORK FAMILY BALANCE AND BURNOUT IN PRACTICING PSYCHOLOGISTS(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2018) Maryam Javed; FA14-BPSY-005; Ms. Zainab Raza; LHR TP 5407The purpose of the current study is to investigate the relationship between personality traits, work family balance, and burnout in practicing psychologists. It was hypothesized that there is a relationship between personality traits, work family balance, and burnout in practicing psychologists. Moreover, personality traits would moderate the relationship of work family balance and burnout in practicing psychologists. A correlational research design was used in this study. The sample comprised of 60 psychologists; and was taken from Lahore though purposive and snowball sampling technique. The Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) (Gosling, Rentfrow, & Swann, 2003); Work Family Balance Measure (Carlson & Grzywacz, 2007); and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) (Kristesen, Borritz, Villadsen, & Christensen, 2005) were used to assess the personality traits, work family balance, and burnout respectively. Pearson product movement correlation analysis and hierarchal regression model were used to assess study objectives. The results showed that work family balance was negatively correlated with burnout. Moreover, age was negatively correlated with client related burnout. Furthermore, the findings indicated that personality trait (conscientiousness) moderates the relationship of work family balance and burnout. Limitations, implications, and future directions of the current study were discussed.Item Relationship between Executive Functions, Alexithymia and Anxiety Symptoms across Adolescence(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2018) Sadia Jafar; SP14-BPSY-005; Dr. Farzana Ashraf,; LHR TP 5406The current study explores the role of executive functioning in the development of alexithymia, and anxiety in adolescents and hypothesized that executive functioning is negatively related and negative predictor of alexithymia and anxiety. Further, there could be significant differences between executive functioning, alexithymia and anxiety across early and middle adolescents and the gender difference between executive functioning, alexithymia and anxiety is also expected. In the cross-sectional study, 185 adolescents selected through simple random sampling from schools of Burewala City. Alexithymia was measured by Toronto Alexithymia scale (Bagby, Parker, & Taylor, 1994) and anxiety was measured by Hamilton Anxiety Scale (Hamilton, 1959). Design Fluency Test and Color-Word Interference Test from Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (Delis, Kaplan, & Kramer, 2001) were used to measure executive functioning. The statistical analysis of Pearson product moment correlation, simple regression analyses and MANOVA were applied for hypotheses testing. The results suggested that executive function is significantly negatively correlated with Alexithymia and Anxiety but not the predictor of alexithymia and anxiety. Further the results explains that there are significant gender differences in executive functioning, Alexithymia and anxiety across early and middle adolescents. The present study concluded that adolescent’s developmental crisis leads to different problems that affect the physical and psychological health of adolescents that demands proper management and suitable interventions.Item Mindfulness, Optimism, and Mental Health of University Students during Covid-19(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2018) Usman Ashraf; FA15-BPY-012; Ms. Zainab Raza; LHR TP 6559The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between mindfulness, optimism, and mental health of University Students during Covid-19 . It was hypothesized that there is a relationship between mindfulness, optimism, and mental health (anxiety, stress, and depression) of university students. A correlational research design was used in this study. The sample of 224 students (male=89, female=135) was taken from online google form. Different scales were used i.e. Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, Optimism Life Orientation Scale and Mental Health DAAS Scale to assess the Mindfulness, Optimism and Mental health in university students. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis and hierarchal regression was used to assess study objectives. According to results, there is negative relationship between optimism and mental health (stress, anxiety, and depression) in university students. Mindfulness negatively predicts stress, anxiety, and depression in university students. Optimism negatively predicts stress and depression in university students. Limitations, implications, and future directions of the current study were discussed.Item Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Mental Health Problems in University Students(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2019) Amna Iftikhar; Sp15-bpy-002; Zainab Raza; LHR TP 5408The present study investigated that relationship between emotional intelligence, resilience and mental health problems in university students. Correlational study was conducted with sample size of n=250 both male (n=139) and female (111) from COMSATS university Islamabad Lahore campus. The data was collected by using convenient sampling. It was hypothesized that there is likely to be a relationship between emotional intelligence, resilience and mental health problems (stress, anxiety and depression) of university students. It was also hypothesized that emotional intelligence and resilience are likely to predict mental health problems of university students. 3 scales were used in the study Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale (Kirk, Schutte, & Hine, 2008), Nicholson McBride Resilience Questionnaire (Davies, Lane, Devonport & Scott 2010) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 Items (DASS-21) (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995). Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to find out the relationship between emotional intelligence , resilience and mental health problems among university students. Moreover, Hierarchical Regression was used to evaluate that mental health problems are predicted by emotional intelligence and resilience. The results showed that there is a significant negative relationship between emotional intelligence, resilience and mental health problems. The results elaborates that if the emotional intelligence score is higher the student have less mental health problem and is resilient. The results also shows that when resilience is low mental health problems are more predicted. The study implies that more work can be done on students to make them more emotional stable and resilient to cope with hard situations and bounce back to the ordinary.Item Cognitive Emotion Regulation Explains the Religious Coping- Mental-well-being Link during COVID-19 in Young Adults(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Mahnoor Arshad; SP17-BPY-013; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 6971The purpose of the current study was twofold: i) to assess the direct, and indirect associations between religious coping, cognitive emotion regulation strategies and mental well being, and ii) to examine whether physical health status moderates the mediated associations between religious coping, cognitive emotion regulation strategies and mental well-being. For this purpose, religious coping was assessed from positive religious coping and negative religious coping; and two selective emotion regulation strategies, Positive reappraisal and Self-blaming, were assessed in the current study. A sample of 200 young adults, ranging in age from 19-36 years (M age= 21.43, SD= 2.96; Men = 82, Women = 116) was selected through an online survey to assess the study objectives. Convenient sampling strategy was used to approach participants and collect data. The Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (Tennant et al., 2007), Brief RCOPE (Pargament et al., 2011) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Garnefski & Kraaij, 2007) were used to assess the mental well-being, level of religious coping, and the use of cognitive emotion regulation respectively. Pearson product-moment correlation and moderated mediation analysis were used to test study hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that only positive religious coping was positively correlated with one cognitive emotion regulation strategy, positive reappraisal, and mental well-being. Findings from mediation analysis indicated that positive reappraisal significantly mediated the link between positive religious coping and mental well-being. Finally, physical health status moderated the mediated association between positive religious coping, positive reappraisal, and mental well-being. More specifically, the mediated link was stronger for participants who reported good physical health status compared to those who reported poor physical health. Limitations, implications and future directions of the current study were also discussed.Item Attachment, Intimate Relationship and Life Satisfaction Among University Students(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Faiza Akhtar; SP17-BPY-022; Dr. Shazia Gulzar; LHR TP 6558The focus of the current study was to determine the association between attachment, intimate relationship and life satisfaction among university students. In the current research it was hypothesized that i) there would be significant positive relationship between attachment and intimate relationship, ii) there would be significant positive relationship between attachment and life satisfaction, iii) there would be significant gender difference in terms of all three variables and iv) there would be significant effect of pertinent demographic variable on these three variables. A sample of 241 participants (men = 110 and women = 131) in age range from 19-25 were selected as the test sample. Attachment, intimate relationships and life satisfaction of students were assessed by using Adult Attachment (Scale Hazen & Shaver 1987) , Intimate Relationship Scale (Gulzar & Mehmood, 2018) and The Satisfaction with Life Scale (Pavot and Diener, 2008). Results indicated that attachment and life satisfaction have significantly positive correlation with intimate relationships. Moreover, Secure attachment has significant positive correlation with life satisfaction while ambivalent and avoidant are negatively correlated with life satisfaction, which means people with secure attachment are satisfied with their life, while those who have avoidant and ambivalent attachment their satisfaction with life is poor. It is also concluded that secure attachment has positive correlation with intimate relationship and avoidant and ambivalent attachment have negative relationship with intimate relationship. Moreover, intimacy in relation has strong positive relationship with secure attachment while negative with conflict in attachment, which represents that people having secure attachment, their intimate relations are better and they have high intimacy in relation where as their conflict in relations are really low. Whereas avoidant and ambivalent attachment have negative association with intimate relationship and intimacy in relation whereas positive relation with conflict in relation, this demonstrates that ix individuals having avoidant and ambivalent attachment have low level of intimacy in their intimate relationships where they have high conflict in their relations.Item Psychological Distress among Students During COVID-19: Sleep Quality and Cognitive Emotion Regulation as Correlates.(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Ruhma Syed; SP17-BPY-005; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 6554The main objectives of the current study were to assess the association between sleep quality and psychological distress and to assess whether cognitive emotion regulation strategies mediate the link between sleep quality and psychological distress. To approach the study objectives, psychological distress was assessed from stress, anxiety, and depression; and emotion regulation was assessed from two cognitive emotion regulation strategies, putting into perspective and catastrophizing. It was hypothesized that there would be positive associations of poor sleep quality with anxiety, depression, and stress. A secondary hypothesis was that the selected cognitive emotion regulation would mediate the association of sleep quality with anxiety, depression, and stress. A sample of 202 college and university students in age range 16-30 (M=21.64, SD= 2.32; Men= 65, Women=137) was selected through an online survey to conduct the study. Convenient sampling strategy was used to approach participants and collect data. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (Buysse, 1989), Depression, anxiety and stress scale-21 (Lovibond, 1995) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Garnefski & Kraaij, 2007) were used to assess the sleep quality, psychological distress variables and the cognitive emotion regulation respectively. Pearson product-moment correlation and mediation analysis were used to test study hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that poor sleep quality was a positive correlate of stress, anxiety, and depression. Findings from mediation analysis indicated that only one of the two cognitive emotion regulation strategies; catastrophizing significantly mediated the association of sleep quality with stress, anxiety, and depression. Limitations, implications and future directions of the current study were also discussed.Item Effects of Meaning in Life on Optimistic Approach of Young Adult Women(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Khola Bukhari; SP17-BPY-008; LHR TP 6973; Dr. Maryam AkramThe present study was designed to investigate the effects of meaning in life on optimistic approach of young adult women. The sample consisted of 143 women, age varying between 18 and 25 years (M=1.45, SD= 1.1) using purposive sampling technique. It was hypothesized that there will be a relationship b/w meaning in life and optimistic approach of young adult women. Presence of meaning and search for meaning were measured by Meaning in Life Questionnaire Optimism and Pessimism were measured by Life Orientation Test-Revised Questionnaire. Results showed that meaning in life has a positive correlation with optimism of young adult women. In addition to that regression analysis indicates that age has a significant positive correlation with presence of meaning of young adult women. This study is unique that it contributes to the society to understand that emotional state of young adult women in their stage of development and how women perceive their lives meaning and values in achieving their goals and objectives. This study has theoretical contribution in the area of positive psychology.Item SEX EDUCATION AND SELF DEFENSE: A QUALITATIVE APPROACH(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) MEHTAB HAFEEZ; SP17-BPY-002; DR. Other than parenting results focus on teachers and university administration to provide educational camps and security to feel free to speak about sexual harassments. Results also indicate that providing sex education along with self-defense is a necessity.Item Objectified Body Consciousness, Selfitis Behavior and Self Esteem in Young Pakistani Women Students(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Sadia Munir; CIIT/SP17-BPY-014/LHR; Dr. Muneeba Shakil; LHR TP 6560This study was carried out with the objective to investigate the predictive relationship of objectified body consciousness and self-esteem with selfitis behavior in young women studying at undergraduate level in universities. It was hypothesized that there will be a significant correlation between study variables and objectified body consciousness and self-esteem will act as predictor of selfitis behavior. A sample of 233 women students aged 18-25 (M age = 21.51, SD =1.79) engaged in selfitis behavior, was selected through convenient sampling technique online from different universities of Lahore, Pakistan. Participants responded to demographic Information form, Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (McKinley, 1996), Selfitis Behavior (Balakrishnan, 2017) and selfesteem scale (Rosenberg, 1965). Analysis reveals that there is a significant relation between OBC and selfitis behavior, however, self-esteem was not found to be associated with both variables. Linear regression analysis revealed that OBC and age both are the predictors of selfitis behavior, however, OBC was found to be a stronger predictor of selfitis behavior. This study is unique in a way that it contributes to the society to better understand the objectified body consciousness in young adult women, and its influence to opt any obsessive behavior like selfitis.Item Relationship between Nomophobia and Socialization and locus of control : Direct and moderating Link(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Neha Malik; Sp17-BPY-017; Dr. Farzana Ashraf; LHR TP 6565The current study was designed to investigate the relationship between nomophobia, socialization & locus of control. In addition, moderating role of locus of control in link between nomophobia and socialization was also assessed. The sample comprised of 321 adults both male and female (109= males, 215= females) age range between 18-25 years (M= 21.49, SD= 1.71). In this correlational research design, the data was collected online through convenient sampling technique from students of different universities of Lahore. Nomophobia, Socialization and Locus of control were measured by administering Nomophobia Questionnaire (Yildrim & Correia 2016), Lubben Social Network Scale (Lubben 1988), and Locus of Control Scale (Ross & Broh 2000) respectively. Correlation analysis demonstrated that nomophobia is positively linked with socialization and locus of control. Regression analysis indicated that nomophobia (i.e. unable to communicate, unable to access information, giving up convenience) is the predictor of locus of control and socialization. Partially significant moderations were observed. The study concluded that it is very important to evolve the awareness about excessive social media usage either for entertainment purpose or for educational purpose. This study is a unique contribution for the society in a way, it will help people to understand that how people mostly spend their time during COVID-19 lockdown. It is mandatory to initiate an education and training to grow conscious awareness about the use of information technologies such as smartphone.Item CURIOSITY AND WORKPLACE SPIRITUALITY IN BANKERS(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Rabbia Saeed; SP17-BPY-020; Dr. Mariyam Akram; LHR TP 6564The aim of the study was to investigate relationship between curiosity and workplace spirituality as well as the predictive role of curiosity on workplace spirituality of bank employees. Convenient and snowball sampling techniques were used to collect the sample of 149 bank employees (Men=99 & Women=50), with age ranging 20-59 years (Young & Middle adults). To assess curiosity and workplace spirituality, Five Dimensional Curiosity Scale Revised by Kashdan et al., (2020), and Workplace Spirituality (WPS) by Petchsawang and Duchon (2016) were used. The results indicated that the bankers with higher curiosity had high workplace spirituality. Moreover, there was gender difference in curiosity as men scored higher in thrill seeking and social curiosity as compared to women. In addition, regression analysis indicated that curiosity positively predicts all the domains of workplace spirituality as joyous explorations and stress tolerance positively predicts workplace spirituality, joyous exploration and thrill seeking positively predicts transcendence, joyous exploration positively predicts meaningful work, joyous exploration, stress tolerance, covert social curiosity positively predicts mindfulness, stress tolerance and thrill seeking positively predicts compassion in bankers. This study has theoretical contribution in the field of industrial-organizational psychology.Item Goal Orientation, Test Anxiety and Aggression in Medical and Non-Medical Students(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Kainat Fatima; CIIT/SP17-BPY-023/LHR; Dr. Farzana AshrafThe focus of the current study was to determine the goal orientation, test anxiety and aggression in medical and non-medical students. In this current research it was hypothesized that i) There is likely to be a correlation in goal orientation, test anxiety, and aggression. ii) Goal orientation, test anxiety, and aggression likely to vary in medical and non-medical students. iii) Demographic characteristics likely relate to goal orientation, test anxiety, and aggression in medical and non-medical students. The current study sample consisted of 300 medicals (n=202) and non-medical (n=99) students. The participant's ages range from 18 to 25 years (M=21.09, SD=1.93). These participants were selected through a convenient random sampling technique from medical college/university and non-medical college/university equally distributed in gender (Male=140) and (Female=160). Goal orientation scale (Was, 2006): Test Anxiety Questionnaire (Nist & Diehl,1990), The Aggression Scale (Orpinas & Frankowski 2001). For hypothesis testing, SPSS was applied to calculate the Independent Sample t-test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and regression analyses. The results suggest that goal orientation has negative significant correlation with aggression and has positive significant correlation with test anxiety. The Independent sample t-test shows that aggression is significantly high in non-medical students while, goal orientation is more in medical students. Linear regression analysis revealed that aggression, marks and educations are the predictor of goal orientation, however aggression was found to be stronger predictor of goal orientation. This study can contribute in acknowledging the comparison between medical and non-medical students using present variables and more variables.Item SOCIAL ISSUES OF PAKISTANI STUDENTS LIVING IN HOSTELS: A QUALITATIVE STUDY(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) Naisha Mukhtar; CIIT/SP17-BPY-001/LHR; Dr. Mariyam Akram; LHR TP 6569The current study explored the social issues faced by the students living in a hostel environment.
