Executive Functioning Profiling of Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder: Association with Impulsive Behaviour and Social Functioning
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2024) Samra Zulfiqar; P23-RCP-024/LHR; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 9528
This cross-sectional study examined the executive functioning profile of individuals with borderline personality disorder. A secondary objective was to assess the association of executive functions with impulsive behavior and social functioning. There were two phases in the study. In phase I translation of impulsive behavior and social functioning scale was done to avoid cultural discrepancy. In phase II, the main study was conducted. Purposive sampling techniques were used for data collection (BPD=150, Controls=200) with matched age, gender, and education. Impulsive behavior and social dysfunctioning were assessed using the short impulsive behavior scale and social functioning questionnaire. The high score on the social functioning questionnaire showed poor social functioning. The executive functioning tests of working memory cognitive flexibility, and inhibition were evaluated by using performance tests. Data analysis was performed using SPSS for the interpretation of data. Regression analysis and t-tests assessed the prediction and differences between groups. Findings showed that individuals with borderline personality had lower scores on executive functioning measures than controls. They made more errors and took more time than controls. The executive functioning measures negatively predicted impulsive behavior and social functioning. In conclusion, the life of borderline personality could be improved by managing their impulsiveness and social dysfunction behavior.

(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2025) Tehseen Iftikhar; Sp23-RCP-030; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 9551
The study assessed the efficiency of cognitive rehabilitation on attention memory as well as language skills in individuals with stroke. The main objective of this research was to determine the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation based on neuroplasticity theory in improving attention, memory and language functions in patients. The study involved a sample of individuals with stroke. A sample of 40 individuals with stroke were chosen from various government and private hospitals of Lahore. Quasi Experimental Research design was used to assign the participant into two conditions (20 experimental group and 20 control group). In this study Mini Mental Status Examination and Pakistan Neuropsychological Test Assessment Battery were used for baseline measurements of attention, memory, and language. In this study, only the experimental group received cognitive rehabilitation intervention, focusing on enhancing attention, memory, and language skills. Cognitive rehabilitation techniques were applied over 12 weeks with 3 sessions per week. Paired sample t test analysis was applied for pre and post assessment differences in attention, memory and language functions. The findings revealed that cognitive rehabilitation improved attention, memory, and language skills as assessed from the Mini Mental Status Examination and Pakistan Neuropsychological Test Assessment Battery. The implications of this study have been discussed with reference to culturally relevant evidence-based rehabilitation approaches, offering meaningful insight for family, caregiver, practitioners and clinicians.

Effectiveness of Cognitive Rehabilitation on Attention, Memory and Language Skills in Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2025) Sunaina Sohaib; SP23-RCP-027/LHR; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 9506
The study investigated the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation therapy on attention, memory, and language in individuals with traumatic brain injury within the Pakistani population. A total of 40 participants (aged 18–60 years) were divided into two groups: 20 individuals in the control group and 20 in the intervention group. The intervention group received 12 weeks of structured therapy sessions designed to improve cognitive functioning. Pre- and post-assessments were conducted using the Mini-Mental State Examination and Pakistan Neuropsychological Testing Assessment Battery to evaluate attention, memory, and language abilities. Paired sample t-test revealed significant improvements in the intervention group compared to the control group, particularly in attention, memory, and language domains. Pre- and post-assessment results demonstrated that cognitive rehabilitation effectively enhanced neurocognitive functioning in individuals with traumatic brain injury. This research emphasizes the critical role of cognitive rehabilitation in improving cognitive outcomes for traumatic brain injury patients and addresses a significant gap in the literature regarding traumatic brain injury rehabilitation within a Pakistani context. The findings contribute valuable insights into the development of effective therapeutic strategies for individuals with traumatic brain injury.

Profiles of Cognitive Emotion Regulation in Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder: Predicting Self Harm and Suicidal Ideation
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2023) Kainat Fatima; SP23-RCP-008; Dr. Shameem Fatima; LHR TP 9522
The main objective of this study was to assess the profile of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in patients with borderline personality disorder compared to healthy controls. A secondary objective was to predict self-harm and suicidal ideation from cognitive emotion regulation strategies. For the main study, self-harm scale was required in Urdu version. Therefore, an additional objective was to translate and validate the self-harm scale into Urdu. The current study assessed nine emotion regulation strategies. The current study sample consisted of 350 individuals (M=30.06, SD=5.01) comprising patients with borderline personality disorder (n =150) & control group (n =200). Clinical samples were selected from clinical settings using purposive sampling technique. Gender, education, and age-matched participants in the control group were selected from community. Both groups were assessed for cognitive emotion regulation, self harm and suicidal ideation scales. Cognitive emotion regulation profiles of patients with borderline personality disorder showed that they significantly endorsed higher scores on specific negative emotion regulation strategies including catastrophizing, other blame, self-blame, and rumination compared to control group. However, they endorsed lower levels of positive emotion regulation strategies compared to control groups. Also, negative emotion regulation strategies positively predicted self-harm and suicidal ideation, and positive regulation strategies negatively predicted self-harm and suicidal ideation in both groups. However, the strength of association was relatively stronger in the clinical group compared to control group.
