Abstract
Financial technology, or “Fintech” as it is popularly known, is one of the most discussed pieces of jargon in financial literature and practice today. The word is a kind of umbrella term that encompasses any kind of technology that is utilised in assisting functions and processes in the financial sector. Indeed, financial technology has been around for a considerably long period of time; ever since the adoption of, say, automated teller machines more than a century earlier, to the adoption of credit cards in the 1950s, and the implementation of internet banking services in the 1990s. However, it has risen dramatically to fame from 2016 onwards, with the mainstream becoming more and more acclimatized to the nature and the scope of the services that it has made possible. This has been demonstrated in the following search graph from Google (Hunjar, 2014).
