Abstract
The trend of using robots as waiters in restaurants is increasing because of the shortage
of manpower and high demand of salaries by the waiters, which has become
problematic for the owners of restaurants. The technology is replacing manual work
force more efficiently. The aim of the project is to develop a Restaurant Serving System
(RSS) framework to automate the delivery of food for local restaurants with commercial
applications. Traditionally the serving systems in China, India, Sri Lanka and other
countries uses robots to deliver food by simple line following techniques and Human
waiters/managers to take order form customers. However, this project improves the
performance of RSS by dividing into two parts. First, client-server communication
(each table provided by android tablet for the customers to place their order and the
order details send to kitchen and manager via server). Second, Table number is assigned
to serving robot via android application and the robot follow the user’s pre-defined path
for different tables and the serving robot have the capability to detect the obstacle in the
path.
Restaurant Serving System is intended with basic behaviour of obstacle detection and
target seeking in dynamic environments using ultrasonic sensors for the efficient
delivery of food and to reach the destination by following user’s pre-defined path by
implementing the speed-time algorithm with the help of speed sensors. RSS will have
graphical user interface system which allows the user to specify food tastes that are of
their interest, approximated budget for each person and approximated delivery time.
And order details of customer will transfer to kitchen (chef) for the preparation of food.
Currently there is no such integrated RSS is available in Pakistan.
