Item VERTICAL FARMING(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) SALMAN MAHMMOD; FA16-BAR-042; DR.SHARIYEH HOSSEINI & MADAM SHAZIA HANIF; LHR TP 7085After the industrial revolution the rapid growth of the urban spaces gives feedback in the form of reducing green spaces. These type of growth also changed the shape, structure and function of the built or unbuilt area of an urban city. Moreover, the population increases cause our farmer to run out of land. The amount of arable Land per person decreased from about an acre in 2000 to roughly half an acre in 2015 and is projected to decline to about a third of an acre by 2050. Now a days the problems we are competing with only be handle to deal with it by technology. By changing the identity of space it could give you feedback in different terms like specific contextual needs and its reaction towards the environment. The strategy for this purpose increased in the framework of productivity with the source of food and reduced the horizontal footprints. The vertical growth of green spaces allows to become the essential component of different system like, energy, water and waste, and positive symbol to give the sustainable life.Item ACTIVE URBAN HUB(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Anzah Muhammad; FA16-BAR-037; LHR TP 7084Living in the metropolitan city with continuous development is hanging the lifestyle of people. The life becomes so fast and everything is on one click of internet. People are forced to adapt sedentary lifestyle because of unavailability of spaces to interact, thus lifestyle diseases are increasing day by day with high rate. These diseases are not only in adults but also in youth. People are unable to understand and abilities due to sedentary lifestyle they have adapted, and facing issues day by day. Youth of today is more involved in sedentary behavior. There is need to enlighten the youth in space regarding their health and social interaction where they will understand their selves and will release out their eager and in energy in good manner.Item HEALING IN THE DARKNESS(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) AIZAZ ABID; FA16-BAR-034; LHR TP 7083“Healing in the Darkness: Empowerment Through Resilient Spaces” explores the relationship between emotional healing and the built environment, focusing on how architecture can support individuals experiencing trauma, isolation, or psychological distress. The project envisions spaces that embrace calmness, privacy, and sensory balance, using light, shadow, materiality, and spatial sequencing to create a therapeutic atmosphere. It emphasizes safe, inclusive environments that encourage self-reflection, recovery, and personal growth. By integrating principles of healing architecture and community support, the study highlights how thoughtfully designed spaces can transform darkness into a journey of empowerment and resilienceItem WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY & TECHNICAL TRAINING CENTER(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Iman Iqbal; FA16-BAR-032; Shazia Hanif; LHR TP 7081This thesis begins by highlighting the problems of gender exclusion from public space. Public space here is defined as the medium of all social constructions and economic generation. The thesis takes a gender specific perspective with the intension to deconstruct the problems women face as a collective within our society. I started by observing the conditions that public space within Pakistan nurtures; how it harbors hostile environments for women. With that in mind it is imperative to shed light to how these spaces construct, reconstruct and internalize discriminatory roles. It adopts the principle that the access citizens have to space is directly related to immediate social structure.(Favro & Weisman, 1994) Unequal participation and exclusion of women as legitimate stakeholders within our environment limits the prosperity of women within our country. The situation continues to perpetuate adding to the demotivating forces normalizing inequitable practices. Our spaces overlook the concerns of women entering into the public sphere. The divisions of gender actively segregates our population, our cities, it constructs suburban dwellings that look at women as transfixed, child bearing entities alienating them to a dormant unpaid labor lifecycle. (Hayden, 1985) . The context of this thesis is the industrial landscape of Sundar Estate. Research was conducted to understand the extent of gender inequality within the estate, extrapolating the contributing factors and linking the disparity to the role of the lack of gender sensitive infrastructure in setting circumstances that not only allow but set conditions for spatial territories to conduct continuous infringement of rights within the industrial landscape. Acknowledging that urban spatial practice to this day proves itself to be non- gender neutral and due to this they have failed to cater to the needs of women and gender-centric marginalized individuals alike, a gender gap on planning exists. (Sassen, 2015) The thesis then suggests (i) how design strategies and principles can facilitate women accessing public space counteracting the opposing patriarchal forces. The thesis hopes to directly contribute to (ii) recognizing the role of design in actively generating gender-inclusive spaces. The goal is to (iii) enhancing and reintroducing the role and participation of women as occupiers, citizens, worthy inhabitants, exercising their full rights to the city. (iv) It hopes to establish design strategies that can bridge the social gap and reconstruct social norms that has been a major player in the marginalization, obstruction of performance and lack of presence of women in our the socioeconomic sphere.Item LEARNING FROM LOCAL SYSTEM ISLAMIC EDUCATIONAL COMPLEX(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Saiful-Islam; FA16-BAR-033; Waqar Aziz; LHR TP 7082Creating a space where Islamic education and western science and technological study are taught in this education institute. these two educations to be studied in one place and also providing an awareness about a local culture of that area in which the institution is to be built which is used to be as single perspective by designing a space where the workspaces have been created by collaboration of religious and western education and also creating a space for learning their own rich culture at the same institute. The spaces will be directly linked with the ministry of science technology for science study and with Wifaq-ul-Madaris for Islamic study. It will also be built relation in society and grab more attention of people towards its rich culture and religion, which is also the identity of our society becomes more dominant in academic education rather preferring the western only. In this condition the design of the institution is based on cultural and regional principles to show the positive aspect and the regional architecture of the country.Item Re-Public Spaces in the City(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Sijal Ejaz; FA16-BAR-031; Sr. Waqar Aziz; LHR TP 7080The concept of a 1“waste-land” has always intrigued me and became a major concern. While looking at the cities and urban areas, we often see some ambiguous spaces, or voids.Vacumes of spaces. Which, even though are parts of the cities but they somehow make their own identities. These lands might be residing within the busiest context of the city or at the margins. I tie this along with another concern that is about the existing public spaces in our cities. Since our cities have started moving towards this great urban jungle of concrete and sky high buildings, we are forgetting the importance of open public spaces. Which hold very basic and important values for the people of the cities. Public space give us a huge opportunity to bond with each other, to socialize, to get some time away from ones busiest routines. They can provide health benefits (physical and mental) to the users if designed with being sensitive to the city environment and itsItem TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Muhammad Haider Javed; FA16-BAR-029; Meekal Chugtai; LHR TP 7079A Technical Training Institute is an educational facility designed to provide practical, skill-based training that bridges the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements. It emphasizes hands-on learning, modern laboratories, workshops, and industry collaboration to enhance employability and entrepreneurship. The study highlights the importance of such institutes in addressing unemployment, improving workforce quality, and supporting economic development by producing skilled professionals aligned with contemporary market demands.Item Condo-munity: A model for compact and smart neighborhood(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Irtiqa Qasim Khan; FA16-BAR-023; Usman Sami; LHR TP 7075Urbanization has some pros and cons; some advancement has changed the community towards better settlements, but the issues cannot be ignored as well. The urban sprawl has created so many issues from commuting (transit system) to neighborhood issues. The vertical expansion of cities is the advancement to cater urban sprawl, and this will lead to vertical living. For that the idea of condominiums will help in providing the facilities like the housing schemes with different sizes of unit which could be customized according to requirement and will be fit in a standing grid structure. The idea of Tetris can be seen used in so many communities and even in urban planning of cities as it allows various modules to fit in with the other in order to create connections between various activities and programs to increase the functionality of the space while enhance the experience and spatial quality. The idea of modular design help to achieve the desired design withing the structural integrity of the high-rise building. The modules can be connected by pathways which will create some spaces “a courtyard” bringing back the sense of communal living and neighborhood concept of “eyes on the street” in order to merge the new design with old identity of neighborhood. The building with an option to add modules later will present a prototype of purchasing a modules size like investing a land/plot on ground will be like purchasing it on a vertical building and having option to build on the frame or saving it as an investment. The module is providing the same level of flexibility which a normal plot has in any housing scheme or a society having garden and terraces along with the plot size according to client’s requirement. the stacking of various modules will allow the privacy too this will be a good step to bring back the communal living in a vertical community.Item CREATING PRESENCE FOR CHRISTIAN CUMMUNITY(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) SAMSON SAMUEL; FA16-BAR-028; Waqar Aziz; LHR TP 7078Although the ethnic origins of Pakistani Christians are diverse, the great majority of them are Punjabis. Very aware of their minority status within an Islamic state, many Christians overlook the customs and social institutions that they share in common with Muslims of the same ethnic background. There are two ways of looking at the minority – majority relationship in Pakistan. The majority would like to assimilate minorities on its own terms, whereas the minorities would like to preserve their culture, religious and ethnic identities. Religious differentiation is one of the most serious problems for human rights of minorities in Pakistan. Minorities face the problems of unequal resources along with extreme marginalization in cities, and layer of fragmentation of their spaces in urban fabric. I’m trying to bridge all tangible and intangible layers and reduce the cultural diversity with the purpose of prejudice elimination and a better understanding of a community by its history and tradition.Item BRADLAUGH HALL ADAPTTIVE REUSE OF BUILDING AND ITS SITE(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2020) MURAD AKRAM; FA16-BAR-024; AR USAMAN SAMI; LHR TP 7076Heritage buildings are critical in terms of convey the cultural identity for further generations. Where heritage buildings can no longer function with its original use, proposing a new function is inevitable in order to preserve the significance of the heritage buildingi. As we saw in Lahore many of our heritage buildings built for some purposes which has no longer exist now. They become or convert into an abandoned building due to multiple reasons which includes natural disaster, conflict and war or other crises. They play an important role to its surrounding as it shows the connection with the past. When the building became abandoned so in that scenario we have to put a new function into the building so that its historic importance increase and keep continue towards development. Same in the case of one of the historic building named as Bradlaugh hallii. It has an abandoned building which has no use for last 11 years and the reason of it abundance is natural disaster. For my thesis I selected that building and its site. Firstly, the data has been collected through literature survey and content analysis. Then, selected adaptive reuse examples have been investigated in the light of the defined factors. I collected all the relevant data and studied the history. At the end, the functions has been developed according to the results.
