(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2021) Irtiqa Qasim Khan; FA16-BAR-023; Usman Sami; LHR TP 7075
Urbanization has some pros and cons; some advancement has changed the community towards better settlements, but the issues cannot be ignored as well. The urban sprawl has created so many issues from commuting (transit system) to neighborhood issues. The vertical expansion of cities is the advancement to cater urban sprawl, and this will lead to vertical living. For that the idea of condominiums will help in providing the facilities like the housing schemes with different sizes of unit which could be customized according to requirement and will be fit in a standing grid structure. The idea of Tetris can be seen used in so many communities and even in urban planning of cities as it allows various modules to fit in with the other in order to create connections between various activities and programs to increase the functionality of the space while enhance the experience and spatial quality. The idea of modular design help to achieve the desired design withing the structural integrity of the high-rise building. The modules can be connected by pathways which will create some spaces “a courtyard” bringing back the sense of communal living and neighborhood concept of “eyes on the street” in order to merge the new design with old identity of neighborhood. The building with an option to add modules later will present a prototype of purchasing a modules size like investing a land/plot on ground will be like purchasing it on a vertical building and having option to build on the frame or saving it as an investment. The module is providing the same level of flexibility which a normal plot has in any housing scheme or a society having garden and terraces along with the plot size according to client’s requirement. the stacking of various modules will allow the privacy too this will be a good step to bring back the communal living in a vertical community.

    TIME & ARCHITECTURE
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) MUHAMMAD UMAIR YASEEN; FA18-BAR-054; Usman Sami; LHR TP 8624
THIS ARCHITECTURAL THESIS AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE INTRICATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIME AND ARCHITECTURE, FOCUSING ON THE CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS OF TIME IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE STUDY RECOGNIZES THAT ARCHITECTURE IS NOT SIMPLY A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS, BUT ALSO A REFLECTION OF SOCIETAL VALUES, CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND THE PASSAGE OF TIME. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO EXPLORE HOW ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CAN TRANSCEND TEMPORAL LIMITATIONS, RESULTING IN SPACES THAT POSSESS A TIMELESS QUALITY.

    DESIGNING FOR THE DESIGNERS
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) Momina Choudhary; FA18-BAR-019; Usman Sami; LHR TP 8606
This thesis explores the concept of designing an innovative architecture department that caters to the needs of architecture students, providing them with spaces for both formal and informal learning. The focal point of this design proposal is the studio space, which plays a crucial role in the journey of architecture students. By creating an environment that fosters personalization, collaboration, and creativity, this project aims to enhance the educational experience and promote a holistic approach to architectural education. The design incorporates L-shaped studios, divided into formal and informal areas, with flexible walls opening into a stepped courtyard, creating a cohesive and dynamic learning environment. The design caters to the environment by using contextual design elements like corridors, courtyards, double facades, and transition spaces and using a bracelet-like approach to joining these elements together. 2 This report focuses into the rationale, design principles, and anticipated benefits of such a space for architecture students.

FORGING VERTIGO: A VERTICAL CINEMATIC ENCLAVE
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) Hashim Azam; FA18-BAR-025; Usman Sami; LHR TP 8609
The concept of creating a vertical film studio complex, named "Vertigo," which reimagines the traditional horizontal layout of film and television studios into a vertical structure. The objective of this project is to optimize space utilization in urban environment where land availability is limited while providing a state-of-the-art facility for film and television production and post-production activities which will act as a landmark for the city and the country itself. The proposed vertical cinematic enclave combines cutting-edge architectural design with innovative technological solutions, while also catering the existing cinema building through adaptive reuse. The vertical layout allows for multiple floors dedicated to different aspects of film production, such as sound stages, production offices, editing suites, post-production facilities, and screening rooms. Vertical transportation systems, advanced soundproofing techniques, and integrated production workflows ensure seamless collaboration and efficient use of resources. Vertigo aims to be a hub for creativity, collaboration, and technological advancement in the film industry. It will attract local and international filmmakers, artists, and production companies, fostering a vibrant community of talent and supporting the growth of the film industry in the region. The complex will also host film festivals, industry events, and educational programs to nurture emerging filmmakers and engage with the broader community. By embracing the existing site and the concept of a vertical cinematic enclave, Vertigo seeks to revolutionize the way films and other cinematic functions are produced, providing an innovative and sustainable solution for urban environments. The project aims to create a landmark that not only serves the needs of the film and television industry but also contributes to the cultural fabric of the city, becoming an iconic symbol of creativity and cinematic excellence.
