Item An environmentally wise and culturally appropriate community school for the desert community at Derawar, Cholistan(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) MUHAMMAD MOIZ KHAN; FA18-BAR-045; Shariyeh Hosseini; LHR TP 8618Living in the harsh climate and barren landscape of a desert presents numerous challenges, particularly in finding suitable shelters that meet physical, psychological, and social needs. Vernacular architecture has traditionally provided solutions to these requirements. However, in Derawar Village, the shift from local practices to industrial architectural products has been observed in recent years. These practices often disregard the local climate, culture, and environment. Derawar has witnessed significant infrastructural development in the past two decades, including basic amenities like water supply, electricity, roads, and internet access. These changes have influenced the community's perception of the built environment. Tourism is also flourishing in the area due to architectural heritage and events like jeep rally which is affecting the local socioeconomics. Consequently, the community faces challenges in adapting to contemporary circumstances while preserving their architectural identity. On the other hand, many guest houses and resorts have been constructed in Derawar, mimicking local aesthetics but employing modern materials, equipment, and techniques. These structures fail to engage and benefit the local population while also causing harm to the environment. Government buildings, such as schools and dispensaries, constructed for the locals, often do not align with local culture and climate, resulting in discomfort for the users.Item THE SENSORY VOYAGE(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) SHUA TAHIR; FA18-BAR-009; Shariyeh Hosseini; LHR TP 8600This thesis critically examines the long-standing practice of rote learning techniques introduced in the sub-continent by the British during the colonial era and proposes an alternative educational paradigm for primary schools in Gujrat, Pakistan. The research investigates the potential of sensory experiences offered by innovative architectural designs to facilitate learning and cognitive development among children. By embracing the philosophy of "learn via play" and promoting creativity, the proposed approach aims to challenge the traditional rote learning methods prevalent in the region and foster a more holistic and engaging educational environment. Through the integration of playful architectural elements such as interactive learning zones, gathering spaces, transitional spaces, natural light, tactile materials, and flexible learning spaces, the thesis seeks to create an environment that nurtures curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking skills. the thesis argues that children learn best when actively engaged in the learning process and when provided with opportunities to explore their surroundings through all their senses. There will be multiple literature reviews, case studies, and interviews with educators and documentations of existing schools to understand existing theories, concepts, and practices related to innovative school designs that cater to the psychological and physical requirements of a child’s learning experience. The research also addresses the practical implementation of this new educational approach in primary schools in Gujrat, Pakistan. It highlights the importance of collaboration among architects, educators, and policymakers to create school infrastructures that align with the principles of sensory-based learning and the philosophy of learning through play. By creating an environment that encourages active engagement, creativity, and critical thinking, this alternative SHUA TAHIR | FA18-BAR-009 6 model aims to nurture the cognitive abilities of children, transforming their educational journey into a joyful and enriching experience
