Abstract
How do we heal those who make mistakes? And what this architecture can do about it? The
project aims to explore, in Lahore, the role of architecture in the design of prisons in order to
comprehend how we could develop a correctional
facility that is a place for both punishment and
rehabilitation without further deteriorating the mental
state of its inhabitants. The effectiveness of a prison is
not given only by the competence of the justice system
in power, but also by the quality of the architecture
and the articulation of spaces. The contradiction of the
prison is revealed by its requirement to respond to two
opposite demands: penance and reintegration. A new
typology can be approached through an attempt to
"break" the macro-themes that illustrate the structure
of the prison and within these dichotomies work on the
"boundary-line" between contrasting realities:
freedom―constriction; openness―closure; etc. If
architecture were to seek more humanize approach
towards prison, it could have a significant impact for
society especially in terms of opportunities and
cultural progress. This paper will explore the
environment in prison which has a great potential to be
more humanizing so that the process of rehabilitation can be aided. It is possible to provide a
sense of normality to comprehend what impact this division has and to what degree it helps
the individuals who are mentally unwell
