Abstract

This thesis explores how architectural set design becomes a narrative force and atmospheric catalyst in cinematic worldbuilding by reimagining Gotham City for Batman 2027. Situated at the intersection of architecture, cinema, urban theory, and production design, the project reveals how cinematic environments transcend mere backdrops to become immersive spatial systems that shape emotion, ideology, memory, movement, and psychological perception. The thesis contends that set design is a true architectural practice, crafting experiential realities through framing, sequence, atmosphere, materiality, and urban composition. Gotham City serves as a living laboratory for this exploration, a fictional metropolis forged by fear, corruption, monumentality, decay, surveillance, trauma, and the pulse of collective urban anxiety. By weaving together cinematic architecture, Gothic urbanism, psychogeography, mise-en-scène, montage theory, and architectural phenomenology, the thesis forges a new spatial language for Batman 2027. Drawing from Neo-Noir cinema, Art Deco grandeur, industrial grit, and speculative futurism, the project envisions Gotham poised between the shadows of historical ruin and the rush of technological acceleration. A core element of the research is creating an original narrative treatment and storyboard sequence for Batman 2027. Here, architecture steps into the spotlight as an active cinematic player directing movement, choreographing emotion, building tension, and sculpting narrative experience. Storyboarding, cinematic framing, lens analysis, and psychogeographic mapping become the architect’s tools for unraveling how space unfolds moment by moment across the cinematic canvas. The project proposes that cinematic techniques such as montage, mise-en-scène, perspective distortion, framing, and camera movement can serve as powerful tools for architectural design. Gotham City is reimagined not as a static urban model but as a living cinematic organism, its districts, infrastructures, voids, and soaring hierarchies constantly evolving through narrative tension and emotional atmosphere. Ultimately, this thesis frames cinematic set design as a visionary form of speculative architecture, stretching the boundaries of the discipline. Through Gotham City, the research uncovers how fictional worlds illuminate hidden truths about urban fear, political unrest, social fragmentation, and the emotional pulse of the modern city.
