dc.description.abstractThis research aims to reveal the American culture which has been assimilated by Chinese daughters in the novel Joy luck club by Amy Tan. It uses Halliday‘s theory of Systemic Functional Grammar. This novel analyze under the heading of the Interpersonal metafunction by using mood, epistemic, and deontic modality. The findings data gives understanding of the interpersonal meaning of clauses which is helpful to understand the reader how language assimilation has strongly effected the mood of language and creates constant conflict in the novel. This conflict creates a language barrier between English and Chinese. The text analyzed with the mood, epistemic and deontic exchange of clause which is part of the Interpersonal metafunction of the dialect used in the text. The text analyzed not only with the help of POS (parts of speech) tagging to get the accuracy of analysis done by researcher, but also tells the tabular analysis of mood and modality. Each sentence has a non-identical interactive status and each one embodies a substitute mood option. The type of research is qualitative, descriptive analysis. The text is a story of mothers and daughters who migrated to America from China to achieve their objectives. The text uses declarative, interrogative, imperative mood forms of the sentences that signify the author's role as an information provider, and the readers as the information receiver. The text is analyzed with the mood, epistemic, and deontic exchange of clause which belongs to the interpersonal metafunction of the language used in the text. Each sentence has an alternate interactional status and each exemplifies an elective mind-set decision.
