An environmentally wise and culturally appropriate community school for the desert community at Derawar, Cholistan
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) MUHAMMAD MOIZ KHAN; FA18-BAR-045; Shariyeh Hosseini; LHR TP 8618
Living in the harsh climate and barren landscape of a desert presents numerous challenges, particularly in finding suitable shelters that meet physical, psychological, and social needs. Vernacular architecture has traditionally provided solutions to these requirements. However, in Derawar Village, the shift from local practices to industrial architectural products has been observed in recent years. These practices often disregard the local climate, culture, and environment. Derawar has witnessed significant infrastructural development in the past two decades, including basic amenities like water supply, electricity, roads, and internet access. These changes have influenced the community's perception of the built environment. Tourism is also flourishing in the area due to architectural heritage and events like jeep rally which is affecting the local socioeconomics. Consequently, the community faces challenges in adapting to contemporary circumstances while preserving their architectural identity. On the other hand, many guest houses and resorts have been constructed in Derawar, mimicking local aesthetics but employing modern materials, equipment, and techniques. These structures fail to engage and benefit the local population while also causing harm to the environment. Government buildings, such as schools and dispensaries, constructed for the locals, often do not align with local culture and climate, resulting in discomfort for the users.

    TIME & ARCHITECTURE
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) MUHAMMAD UMAIR YASEEN; FA18-BAR-054; Usman Sami; LHR TP 8624
THIS ARCHITECTURAL THESIS AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE INTRICATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIME AND ARCHITECTURE, FOCUSING ON THE CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS OF TIME IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE STUDY RECOGNIZES THAT ARCHITECTURE IS NOT SIMPLY A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS, BUT ALSO A REFLECTION OF SOCIETAL VALUES, CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND THE PASSAGE OF TIME. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO EXPLORE HOW ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CAN TRANSCEND TEMPORAL LIMITATIONS, RESULTING IN SPACES THAT POSSESS A TIMELESS QUALITY.

    RETHINKING STUDENT HOUSING: THE STUDWELLS
(Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus, 2022) HASNAT HAYAT; FA18-BAR-046; Mekaal Chugtai; LHR TP 8619
The project is centered at Comsats University, Lahore which addresses the pressing living conditions of out of station students and shortage of student hostels in the campus, coming up with a 'student housing' design. The existing on-campus student housing facility falls short in meeting the demand of a high number of out of station students. The shortage of on-campus hostel facilities and the poor living conditions of existing hostels not only affect students' academic performance but also negatively impacts their overall university experience and well-being. The aim of this project is to provide an innovative approach that enhances the living experience and supports the academic success of students. It focuses on the development of a student living solution to promote social interaction and community building among residents, where the social spaces will be serving as catalyst for personal and academic growth, fostering a sense of belonging and support among students. Further, it aims to improve living conditions and resolve problems of existing on campus hostel in proposed design. In short, the design solution aims to create a thriving living environment that promotes academic success, social engagement, and overall well-being for students
