Abstract:
This research aims to explore the multifaceted objectification and the identification of women
in Aatish Taseer translation of selected short stories of Saadat Hasan Manto’s including ‘Toba
Tek Singh’ and ‘The Dog of Tithwal.’ The study uses Dialogic Discourse Analysis (DDA) as
an analytical framework to uncover complex layers of meaning within these short stories and
gain a deeper comprehension of the approaches in which gender, power and ideology
intersect in the pursuit of personal and collective freedom. The research builds upon the data
collected from Aatish Taseer translation of Manto’s twelve short stories. Through analyzing
the data, using Feminist CDA, the narratives of the short stories are critically analyzed,
revealing the underlying power dynamics and ideological representations of gender. The
narratives unveil the ideological objectification and identification of women, shedding light
on the intricacies of power dynamics and gender ideologies prevalent in society. The study
employs ‘stylization’ as a noticeable example of Unidirectional Double-voiced Discourse
along with ‘Narrator’s narration’ and ‘Unobjectified discourse’. The study also employs
‘Parody’ as noticeable example of Vari-directional Double-voiced Discourse along with
‘Parodistic discourse’ and ‘Parodistic narration’. These Double-voiced Discourse (DvD)
features helps to explore the objectification and identification of women in short stories of
Manto. Overall, this research provides a comprehensive exploration of short stories of Indo-
Pak writer Saadat Hasan Manto’s and adds to the grasping of feminist social structures in
Partition narratives.
