Abstract:
In this research work a synergistic effect of different fillers consists of Alumina
Trihydrate (ATH)and Polyaniline (PANI)which were added in the EPDM (ethylene
propylene diene monomer rubber) have been studied. The multicomponent systems
consisting of the ATH and PANI wereformulated in order to increase the flame
retardancy and mechanical properties of the rubber composites while decreasing the
amount of fillers. A detailed study was performed on the four different rubber composites
consists of EPDM, EPDM/PANI, EPDM/ATH and EPDM/ATH/PANI to monitor the
impact on mechanical properties and fire retardant properties. The four EPDM materials
were studied by using different tests such as Cone calorimeter, UL94 test, Limiting
oxygen index (LOI), thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA), XRD, FTIR. They showed that
the multicomponent system led to enhance the flame retardancy and mechanical
properties of the rubber compound. Curing test by Die Rheometer showed that the fillers
are well distributed in the matrix. The data collected from the cone calorimeter was used
to identify the layer protectiveness effect on the multicomponent flame retardant system
on the ethylene propylene diene rubber EPDM.
